How to Obtain the Best Dental Rates

Individuals who are unable to obtain dental insurance through their employer in Nashville will often need to obtain individual dental insurance. Without dental insurance you may find that the cost of dental care is prohibitive. Still, it is important to find the best dental rates possible.

When shopping around for the best dental rates it is important to make sure you know what you are comparing. There are basically two different kinds of dental plans. The type of plan that you choose can impact your dental rates as well as what you pay for your dental services and procedures.

The first type of dental plan you should be aware of is a Dental Health Maintenance Organization. Commonly referred to as a DHMO plan, this type of plan typically offers more affordable dental rates. You should know; however, that with a DHMO you must use dentists that participate in the plan. Other than the great dental rates you can obtain with this type of plan there is another advantage. There are generally no waiting periods. If you need to save money on dental rates and you do not mind going to participating dentists then this type of plan can be a good option.

If you need a more flexible plan, you may wish to consider an indemnity plan. The advantages of an indemnity plan include the fact that you can choose your own dentist and are not required to use a participating dentist. In addition there are usually a large number of plans from which you can choose.

Of course, you should also understand that like any other plan there are also disadvantages associated with an indemnity plan. First, waiting periods are common with indemnity plans. The waiting periods can vary based on the plan you choose; however, in some cases the waiting periods can be as long as 24 months for major services. For basic services, waiting periods can be as long as six months. An indemnity plan may also involve an annual deductible. Once again, this may vary but many deductibles begin at around $50.

Understanding the differences between the different types of dental plans can help you to choose the best plan to meet your needs as well as help you to find the best dental rates. Dental care is important and by educating yourself you can find the best rates to help you afford this important health care.
